BioDanza. The Dance of Life
BioDanza- The Dance of Life
My direct experience with BioDanza:
As you can see in the video, Biodanza has quite a positive impact on the participants. For me personally, after taking only 3 classes (which range from 1.5 – 2 hours long each) at the Jonathan SeminarHotel in Hart, Germany- I was loving it! At first it was a bit awkward, as I am used to dancing in my own space, and usually in a loud, crowded, dark night club to bass filled electronic music. But this is quite different from that! In this class you are invited to get connected on a bit of an intimate level and it really tests your level of comfort with yourself, and with complete strangers. As a permanent nomad for the last 3 plus years, being up close and personal with strangers is something I have grown quite used to, and yet, I was a bit intimidated at first. But once the music starts, the energy is infectious. The classes I took part in always started with high energy exercises and gradually slowed down in intensity, and by the end it was a big cuddle puddle which was just fine by me! And when the weekend fest was over, it was as if this group of strangers had become a bit like family, chatting away over lunch as if they had known each other for years. All in all, I would say it is a great way to get in touch with yourself, and with others in completely uncomfortably comforting experience.
So just what is BioDanza?
Biodanza (neologism from the Greek bio (life) and the Spanish danza (dance), literally the dance of life) is a system of self-development that uses music, movement and positive feelings to deepen self-awareness. It seeks to promote the ability to make a holistic link to oneself and one’s emotions and to express them organically. Biodanza also claims to allow one to deepen the bonds with others and nature and to express those feelings congenially. Source: Wikipedia
Biodanza can also be defined as a “human integration system of organic renewal, of affective re-education, and of re-learning of Life’s original functions. Its application consists in leading vivencias through music, singing, movements and group encounter situations. It is a method which aims the development of human capacities, including the feeling of happiness, communication skills and improving of relationships.
Where did BioDanza originate?
Biodanza was created in the 1960s by the Chilean anthropologist and psychologist Rolando Toro Araneda. It was during his work at the Centre for Psychiatric Research in Santiago that Biodanza was born, as his intention was to create something that would re-educate our broken gestures, and that we would re-learn at an affective level and give life to view that we all matter, that we are all connected, and that our cells are all working in perfect harmony within us, with each other, and with the universe.
The Biodanza system is now found in 54 countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Spain, Chile, France, Norway, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Uruguay, Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States, Colombia, Venezuela, and Belgium.
